Ready to Play Drums With No Equipment?

You don’t need a fancy drum set to get started. In fact, all you need is a desk, your hands, and this lesson. That’s right β€” your first real drum beat starts right now.

Whether you’re in a small flat in Johannesburg or just testing the waters before buying your first kit, this beginner-friendly groove will get your rhythm flowing.

πŸ₯ The Basic Beat: Kick – Snare – Hi-Hat

We’re going to build a simple four-count beat using three basic parts:

  • Kick (K): Tap with your right hand on the edge of the desk (simulate your bass drum).
  • Snare (S): Tap with your left hand on the center (simulate your snare).
  • Hi-Hat (H): Lightly tap a constant rhythm (use fingertips or pencil on the desk).

Pattern (1 Bar):
H H H H
K – S –

Count it out:
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
K – H – S – H

🧠 How to Practice

  1. Sit comfortably at a desk or table.
  2. Assign:
    • Right hand = Kick (edge of the desk)
    • Left hand = Snare (center of the desk)
    • Finger or pencil = Hi-Hat (light taps on the desk)
  3. Start slow:
    • Count out loud: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
    • Play the kick on 1, snare on 3, and hi-hats on every &.
  4. Repeat for 2 minutes at a time.

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: Use a metronome app set to 60–80 BPM to stay in time!

πŸ” Level Up

Once you’re comfortable:

  • Try speeding up to 90 BPM.
  • Add a second kick on the β€œ&” after beat 2 (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &).
  • Switch hands to simulate playing open-handed.
